Why filter your water?
No matter where it is sourced, as water travels through the environment, it has the potential to absorb contaminants. Air borne pollution, including industrial waste, is found in rainwater and chemicals, including fertiliser run-off, and can affect dams and bore water.
By the time tap water arrives at your home it has had many opportunities to pick up environmental contaminants and pollutants, particularly from old water pipes and open water catchment systems. The chemicals (such as chlorine) added to your water by water authorities can have a range of negative impacts on your health.
In addition, the build up of scale, particularly in hard water areas can severely effect the functioning of your water appliances such as hot water systems, dishwashers and coffee machines.
Filtering the water you and your family use at home is the most effective way to eliminate these contaminants.
Filtered Water is Healthier
We all know that we need to drink at least 6 – 8 glasses of water per day to maintain our good health – however, the quality of the water we drink is very important to our health outcomes.
Filtering your water is the most reliable way to remove:
- Sediment and suspended matter
- Water borne diseases including giardia and cryptosporidium
- Chemicals such as iron, manganese, chlorine and hydrogen sulphide
- Discolouration
- Odour
Additionally, speciality cartridges or membranes can be installed to address specific problems like lead.
So, is filtered water healthier? You bet it is – and it tastes great too
How will a Filter save me money?
Let’s consider this:
If you currently buy bottled water in Australia, you are probably paying $1.75-$1.80 per litre, which is more expensive than petrol.
Obviously, costs of filtering your water will vary depending on how much you use, but it is estimated your clean filtered water will cost you between 1-2 cents per litre – Now that is a big difference..
And that’s not all!
If you are using filtered water, your water using appliances will last longer as there will be no scale build up and no nasty marks on your ironing either.
The Environment
Do you know that if the average person consumed 2 litres per day of bottled water, during their lifetime they would generate, conservatively, over 38,000 empty plastic bottles?
By installing a water purification system and refilling your own container, think about how much plastic you are NOT generating into the environment and give yourself a big pat on the back.
How does my filter work?
It is simple really – water is just Hydrogen and Oxygen. Anything else is a contaminant and whether it is physical (such a dirt or grit or rust particles) or chemical (such as chlorine molecules), it’s suspended in the pure water.
These contaminants are measured in microns, with one micron measuring 1 millionth of a metre or 0.000039 of an inch. To give you an example, a human hair is around 100 microns.
Filters are rated to various micron levels, obviously the smaller the micron level the smaller the particle or molecule they will remove from your water.
Our typical undersink residential purification system contains 2 filter cartridges. The first is rated to 5 microns and this will remove dirt, grit and sediment from your water. The second (and this is probably the most important one) is rated a 0.5 micron and is designed to remove chlorine and any other taste and odour causing chemicals and bacteria such as giardia and cryptosporidium.
It is very important to note that no normally available filter cartridge will remove viruses from water as it would need to be smaller than 0.01 microns and, at that level of filtration, the water would not flow through efficiently.
The only way to effective remove viruses is to install a Reverse Osmosis (RO) system which, while considerably more expensive, is the alternative if viruses are a danger.
Installing Your System
With the exception of our countertop systems, which connect straight on to your cold water tap, your purification system must be installed by a Licensed Plumber.
Maintaining your system
The only maintenance required to keep your system in tip top condition and continuing to provide clean, fresh water for you and your family, is to replace the filter cartridges.
Now, how often you need to change them is dependant on how much water you use and how contaminated it is.
However, under normal conditions your cartridge/s should last a minimum of 6 months and a maximum of 12 months.
We recommend that, to ensure your system keeps working at its peak, your cartridges are changed every 6 months. If you are concerned about the operation of your filter or have any questions about your water quality, please do not hesitate to contact us.
Our Guarantee to You
Every product we sell comes with a full manufacturer’s warranty and, in the case of filter cartridges, is certified to comply with its particular micron rating.
If you have any concerns about the quality of any product we have supplied, please contact us.
Of course, all our products must be installed as per manufacturer’s instructions and be suitable for your individual situation – again, if you are not sure what filter or replacement cartridge you require, please contact us.
